I'm fairly competent in body language and tone of written language (such as reading between the lines).

I wish I could say that for Japanese (I'm better at the spoken than written)...

Edited: I reversed written with spoken. Sigh...

Speaking a foreign languages opens doors for you in all walks of life. I don't see where the debate is. It can means you make new friends, have new career opportunities and also it's an attractive trait for someone to have. Cultured, is the word.
