You should go around and educate.

I like having as least editing as possible on vb files cause of the upgrade and portability factor.

exactly! my stable (in the wild, running with multiple hacks without falling down) is different from their stable (vanilla install in a test environment).

Have a look at the following thread to see why some bigger hacks and hacks that are a bit more performance optimized still need code edits (unless Jelsoft do something about it): CODERS PLEASE DISCUSS!!! Pre-Datastore modifications with XML-files (UPDATE 28-7)
