nope, it's a bug in vb's moderation system.
the devs forgot a visible=1 in some update thread counter functions, and when there are hidden posts the replycount of threadtable, which is used to generate the pagelinks on forumdisplay, is incorrect

well it's not too hard, but there are more than one file affected, so i don't want to do it, as it's not a real problem, and with vb3 there will be a lot changes...

have you see the vb3 code at all yet? other than view source? will be interesting to see how much has changed, and how to code new hacks for it I'm starting the learn how v2.30 is now

Most of the code has been rewritten for vB3. So all of us will need to get familiar with it.
