vbF Journal
Article Publishing Module
by

1.- Credit goes to:
  1. MicroHellas, as this module has developed by her.
  2. Olympic, for his corrections to secure this module according to vB's standards.
2.- General information
  • This module is mainly for use for Article posting with 1 photo. Unlike vbNews and vbArticles which are using 3nd party HTML editor, vbJurnal uses vB's Editor.
  • Editors choice Articles
  • Breaking Articles
  • Important Articles
  • RSS per category
  • Newest Articles by category
  • Most Active Authors (according to the number of post Articles)
  • All these blocks can be turn off in case that you don't need them, by setting 0 as the number of appearing articles
  • All these blocks are following the active category. eg Breaking news in main page shows articles from all categories. Breaking news while you're in X category shows breaking news from X category only.
3.- Installation
  1. Open vbjournal.php file with a text editor like notepad. At line 9 you'll find a variable: $mydateformat = 'm/d/Y'; This is set to default US date format. You can change it according to your country's setting eg. for UK d/m/Y or for other European countries to d.m.Y or d-m-Y. You can also add the time if you want. eg 'd/m/Y H:ia' this will give 20/8/2007 14:15pm. The reason that I didn't used the internal vbdate function is because that some users from Scandinavian countries, Spain and France had problems with vbdate().
  2. Upload the contains of /forum directory to the same directory where you've installed vBulletin. Please note that if you've another vbF module already installed, you'll get a message for file "loading.gif" that already exists. Don't worry. You can skip or overwrite it as it's the same image.
  3. CMOD following directories to 777
    1. /photos (inside vbjournal directory)
    2. /tmp (inside vbjournal directory)
    3. /thumbs (inside vbjournal/photos directory)
  4. For security reasons backup your database AND turn your board off
  5. Check at your AdminCP->vBulletin Options->Plugin/Hook System that Plugin system is enabled.
  6. From your AdminCP->Plugin System->Manage Products choose Add/Import Product and import the product: product_vbjournal.xml
  7. If you want to add a link to your nav bar then you must edit the NAVBAR template:
    1. Search For:
      Code:
      <td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>
    2. Add Below:
      Code:
      <td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="vbjournal.php$session[sessionurl_q]">Journal</a></td>
      ....or use any other word you want.
  8. By default none usergroup has permissions to use vbjournal, so you need to give permissions to any group. Goto AdminCP->Usergroups->Usergroup Manager and edit any usergroup you like to give permissions.
  9. In your adminCP, under vbJournal, choose vbJournal options and configure it depending on your needs. If you can't see vbJournal's menu, press F5 to refresh the page, or logout and login again to your admincp.
  10. Now, you can access vbJournal at: www.youdomain.com/vb_installation/vbjournal.php

Nothing is wrong with the code there. I just let it as is planing to add subcategories there.

well on other pages my categories list in the left side but not on that particular page for some reason, thats why I asked about it. As you can see that on one page the cats are listed and in the other they aren't.

Yes, that's correct. As I seen the 2nd screenshoot is the list of articles from category xxx. As there are no subcategories there, it shows nothing. This block in a furture upgrade will populate with the list of subcategories. You must use the link in NavBar to go back.
But if you need this block populated with categories again, I can modify the code. It's trivial.

hmm i didnt see much of a difference in the code other than
the sql call for $_REQUEST['do'] == 'main' is below
Code:
  $categories_get = $vbulletin->db->query_read("

	    SELECT *

      FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "vbjournal_categories

      ORDER BY display ASC

	    ");

      while ($category = $vbulletin->db->fetch_array($categories_get)){

             $totalcats ++;

             eval('$categories .= "' . fetch_template('vbjournal_categorybit') . '";');

             eval('$vcategories .= "' . fetch_template('vbjournal_vcategorybit') . '";');

      }
the one for $_REQUEST['do'] == 'category'
Code:
  $categories_get = $vbulletin->db->query_read("

	    SELECT *

        FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "vbjournal_categories

        ORDER BY display ASC

	    ");

        while ($category = $vbulletin->db->fetch_array($categories_get)){

               $totalcats ++;

               eval('$vcategories .= "' . fetch_template('vbjournal_vcategorybit') . '";');

        }
I must be looking at the wrong spot or something can you tell me what to edit for the time being until the sub cats are integrated? That would be great

For some reason if I have a breaking article, on the main page the no photo is not showing. I changed a line in the template vbjournal_breakingarticlebit and the line
Code:
<if condition="$breakingarticle[photo]<>''">
to
Code:
<if condition="$breakingarticle[photo]>'0'">
and now the image shows...

Sure you didn't found any difference in the code, as the difference is not there. To resolve it is much more easier than you can imagine. Just open template: sitenews_categorylisting. 24 lines from the begining you'll see:
Code:
<table width="100%" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2">
</table>
Then just enter between 2 lines: $vcategories

Save it and the categories will appear.

Is it possible to add video (from Youtube and/or Brightcove) instead of an image and have it display a thumbnail of the video on main pages?

I would be willing to pay for such a modification.

If you mean on article's main photo, no, currently you can't. But as I know there is a plugin to add YouTUBE video in vB's editor.
