AN-net, it is great to hear that you are making progress! This will be a great hack for all of the community and your work is really appreciated.
The requests that I made earlier are based on various threads here at vB that discuss the previous journal system for vB2...the things that people who have used a journal system seemed to need. The ability for admin to delete/edit/view all entries is needed to avoid abuse of the system by users. It would be great if everyone were as nice as you and I, but they aren't. If you could perhaps give us a list of your proposed features, those with experience using this kind of hack could contribute to making this an amazing hack. Please do not be discouraged by the lack of responses to your proposed hack...I think the reason that people are not jumping in to cheer you on is because so many people have promised this hack and then not followed through. And a lot of people are "stuck" with Ryangel's vB2 Journal Hack with no way to upgrade it to vB3. You should take a look at this thread to get an idea of how truly desperate those people are! And you might look at this to see what type of journal system most people are hoping for. Again, thank you for your hard work. |

do you really want this hack to use your buddy list you provided for vb already?

Of course we are talking about only the journalist who wish not to have a certain entry viewed publicly, correct?
In an earlier post you said: "instead of using buddylist i though the journalist could designate for each entry who may see that entry by userid" 1. I'm not sure how this could work. Let's say the journalist has 30 people that they would allow to see the entry or comment on the entry. That would take a lot of work to add them individually. 2. If the journalist has a buddy list, and he/she has the option of saying yes/no to the people on his buddy list viewing a particular entry, then that seems a more efficient way to do it. If they don't want someone on their buddy list to view their entries, then they could take them off the list as a buddy. 3. I like your idea of it being on a per entry basis. 4. It is your hack, your hard work. I think it would be nice if this could some how be left to the journalist as their option...but that is your decision. I totally respect that you should do what you think is best. And I thank you for being open to suggestions! |

if this was to be added to my site, admin would set viewing permissions at install.. by default, it should only be to ragistered and above.. anything that needs to remain that private doesn't need to be on a public forum..
that is my personal opinion and mine alone.. i just don't think it's a good idea that potential community issues could develop if one of the viewers says how the writer hates another user within the community.. that would break up a board very quickly.. and i would hope an "addition" to a forum wouldn't mean instant subtraction of participation and membership.. only an admin should ever have the ability to keep entries private.. and only his own.. |

AN-net...could the permission to view be changed on an entry later by the journalist?
What I am thinking is that this would allow journalists to keep entries "hidden" if they want to work on a "rough draft" version of something. Then later, when they have polished their words, they might "publish" them by changing the viewing/comments permissions. And in a separate issue: Will it be possible to list say 25 of the journalist's entries with a "view all entries" link to keep things tidy? And could you keep the word "journal" template driven? So, that the admin can call journals whatever we want? Say..."reports" or "journals" or "articles" IF you have ruled out letting admin define categories? ========= Quote:
