I think that the reputation system can only work as a moderated system. i.e. have mods approve each rating.
Probably you are right. Not all of us can afford that ;-) It's very heavy to manage.

I installed the "Post Thanks" mod and it's all right. No problem at all. I made all thanks not anonymous and every thing is fine.

I don't get the reputation system at all so I don't use it. How does having a public reputation displayed help keep a forum even? I serious don't know and would like to. I rarely have to moderate my members other that too many non bb smilies and now that we've made a few security and user group permission changes, I rarely have spam now as well.

If your forum appreciates members striving for a high signal to noise ratio, then reputation can help. Members will strive for high reputation, if you reward them for it. If you make sure that your members only give reputation for informative posts, then you have a winner.

As a result of my experience with reputation as a unmoderated system and its abuse potential as such, I have requested a few hacks to be coded.

I hope that once that is running, reputation will be less vulnerable to abuse.

as is reputation is not a valid tool for self moderating a forum. Members complain if you disable "show who left reps" and they continuously create rep cliques who cricle rep each other, negative rep and retaliate with any who don't agree. We have it set up to "promote" members to a banned group once -25 rep is reached....this works well for obvious trolls..but once a member pads their score then it becomes in-affective.

For reputation to work it needs to be like a gas tank..full, empty, or anywhere in between. Once full those members should still be able to receive comments..but no more points. Also, with this system a member should only be able to rep a member once and then either delete that rep or change it. This would give a much better indication of the members true reputation in the forum.

There is a hack that enables the deleting/changing of rep points already so this should be a fairly easy fix.

Or use a user rating by dividing the rep/post count.
