I would suggest a "Update Button". Don't like to press Uninstall/Install each time a hack is updated

just download the updated file, and the hack isn'T marked as updated anylonger...

You don't even need to download it, just click on the link and then cancel the download.

What about when people reply to the thread? The problem I have is that people respond to the thread, so it shows up as 'updated', but it's not really the hack, just the thread.. Minor problem, really - if I have to, I go look at the hack and that shows the file date of the hack.. But automation makes me lazier and lazier

I think you are confused - by updated we mean the prefix to the thread title which shows either "Installed" or "Updated" - posting to a thread has no effect on them. You seem to be referring to threads being marked as having unread posts.
