Is this a shared server or a dedicated server? Quad CPUs? How are you getting the loads? Via TOP or a script?

I have a dedicated IP and there is one other site on it. But it has been like that all along and no problems. Here is what it is up to at last check a minute ago:

Server Load: 766.74 ? 764.05 : 757.00

We have dual Xeon 2.4 GHX processors.

He updated Apache and MySQL the other day but it was fine. It all started on the afternoon of the 16th (yestereday). It just keeps climbing. The site is still up and running fine. These are Microstats server loads, by the way.

Ok, I just did a soft reset of the server and here is what they are now:

Server Load: 0.05 ? 0.19 : 0.15

They were starting to go up again until I restarted Apache. I also restarted MySQL and FTP. Do I need to restart any more services like POP3 or did it take care of it when I rebooted?

EDIT: And here is what they are right now:

Server Load: 0.01 ? 0.11 : 0.13

Check your log files and make sure they're not too big. Make sure your server hasn't been hacked and turned into a file server or something.

How do I do all that? I'm new at this.

And whatever it was is back. These are my stats as of right now:

Server Load: 615.31 ? 610.82 : 603.20

What do I do now?

if its linux: ps -aux
in terminal window will show all processes and processor loads and show what user is running the process

in linux type top and it will show all the top porcess running
look what is abusing your CPU !!

i had it once to 274 and it was due to MYSQL .. i had to upgrade the Mysql again and it worked fine since then
