I like to be called Michael (since that's my name) and I don't really like it when people calls me Mike (because of many reasons )...I sometimes don't like be called Simon (my last name) but I guess I have to get used to that since I'm starting to use it in some places as Simonsoft

On almost all boards, my username is my real name (Mark Hensler). But there are a few out there that still have my alias (Max Albert).

On my forum, I added a required custom field called "Real Name." Becuase the forum is a school forum, everybody know each other and most of the members just enter their first names.
At first, I made it viewable only by mods and admins. Then I realized that people is less confortable when they don't know who they are talking with, so I edited postbit to display the real names under each post. I think that in most of the forums where people only meet online, real names are not neccessary and you can lie about your real name. However, like a school or a community forum, in which people also see each other in flesh, real names make things easier. |
