As far as its protection against denial of service attacks go, it's nominal. Most people who believe they have been attacked in the past actually weren't. The likelihood of you being the target of a DoS attack is extremely low.
As far as your actual problem goes, this is well covered at the CF support area, there's a edit needed in one of the vB files so actual IPs are shown instead of the proxy. It's also explained to you during the CF install process.

I disagree. I switched form MaxCDN to Cloudflare because the SSL in the pro package was cheaper then using a SSL with MaxCDN. More is being served from the CDN than ever before and processor usage is down slightly. I have had no issues with downtime or slowness and it stopped the spam mail I was getting. Cloudflare is great and that is why sites like digitalpoint and reddit use it. It isn't needed for everyone but if you have a busy site it is worth it.
That being said you should really do other things first to improve page performance. Things like memcache, zend opcache and plugins like DBTECH Optimise Pro will make greater impacts.
Install mod_cloudflare (or whatever it is called) and it will fix your IP issue. Also disable rocket launcher as it has issues with vb javascript.
