Hell...I am still running 3.6.5. I got vBulletin right before the last mad rush of updates and by then I already had installed a bunch of modifications. The whole upgrade thing scares me....I need to learn more about vbulletin before I upgrade.

Upgraded last night. Took an hour. 3 templates modified, like 5 or 6 not so heavy plugins installed. Works like a charm.

Do you have to turn off the board in order to do the update?

If you are worried about losing your whole forum backup your whole forum - The main things that will be gone when you upgrade is the image folder, you should not overwrite this file when you upgrade. I made that mistake and I had upload my backed up image folder. Also, be sure to back up the xml in your include's folder, you will have to re-upload that as well.
Other than the thing things that I mentioned the upgrade went really smoothly for me. I had a lot of mods as well as template changes. The template's code is in the database so when you overwrite your files, they will ask you revert them after upgrading. (You can refuse to revert of course) |

I have about 2 times that amount of mods installed :/
and I have several templates (3 unique) and I upgraded and it took me about 20 minutes in total. Just use version history, I had to change 11 templates on each skin, didnt take long at all. |

My rule of thumb is this...
Backup everything prior to the upgrade... Then when you FTP the new files only overwrite files (NOT folders) this way you can ensure you're not overwriting something in a folder that is part of a modification you've added... When adding images check vb.com to see which images have changed and which are new. If you are using a custom style only add the new images.... Lastly, compare the new template with the modified templates and make any changes needed. With the new plugins and products you should really one have 3-10 templates to change/update. If you have more than that I would bet there are little to no changes if you check the updated modifications... ![]() This is my method and it works well for me... ![]() |
