Just remember, all the templates are is html pages being displayed with php. Treat them exactly as you would regular html files. With that said, http://www.w3schools.com/ may be your best friend.

A template is basically the container of the contents that will be displayed on a page, so you have 1/2 the equation -- you just need a page to display your template contents on.
