You can safely update your site (full update). It only affects hacks using code modifications (file-edits), you need to re-do those code modifications. The update won't affect any plugins, ...
Plugins using the hook locations in the vBulletin Archive will be affected (this is something special with this release, read the announcement) and they won't work. But there aren't many hacks using hook locations in the Archive.

You will get a notification in the AdminCP if you are using old, modified templates you need to update for this new version (you get this notification after the update). So you can back them up first, then revert them and re-edit them.

It's worth having a development site running as well to test hacks and upgrades. It saves breaking things and then having the board offline while you try to fix it.

I still have plenty of file edits. LOL! My hacks are mostly to optimize vB and to run it on a multi-server cluster so there's no way around it.
