With the new product system, it makes it even easier to add more hacks because you don't have to re-edit files on an upgrade. That used to stop a lot of hacks being installed because they knew what they were in for when upgrading.

And then you get coders like Andreas who come up with excellent hacks that you can't help but install. Let's blame him.

Of course Boofo, there are many excellent coders here. I am not talking about installing many mods (I also have a lot) but OVERSTUFFING the forum with them and making that obvious to the public. I think the difference in the two situations is pretty easy to spot.

I totally agree. But I think it's more of a "I want to have something totally different than anyone else" syndrome. And in order to do that, they will install almost anything to accomplish that goal. And as far as showing it so publicly, that's exactly what it is, for show. Most of the Mods I use the average user will never see or even know is there. I go for functionality more than I do for show. My forums are pretty plain, but they get the job done, I think. It's what's under the hood that really counts.

I think the best deal is a balance on those two

I've got a LOT of Hacks installed (you won't recognize the files any longer ...), yet I think my board isn't "overstuffed".
Is it?

Also, quite a few of the Hacks I made in the past and still got installed (user option for birthday privacy, uneditable profile fields required for registration, jump to page in pagenav, etc.) are standard functionality by now

It all depends on the site really...I don't think a certain number of mods makes a board "overstuffed" it's only when mods are installed that add no benefit to the community.

Andreas imho it depends on the hacks. do you have any of the 'symptoms' I mentioned in my first post?

-----------------

Btw I also have a mod frenzy sometimes and if I didn't have the other admin to hold me back there is a high chance that I had an overstuffed forum by now. I don't think I'm very far of the crossing line

Yes and no. Pretty is nice, but it doesn't really add any meat to the site. Some of the plainest and most boring looking sites you will ever see can be the busiest you will ever see too. Because you don't have to wait for all of the stuff to load to be able to get in and do anything. I have noticed though that a lot of the real "pretty" sites (as I call the graphical ones) don't have a lot of member activity as they usually tend to think that skins and graphics will attract users more than content.

I got 1 additional row on What's going on (for Users in Chat), the Navbar is 1 row, the postbit additionaly shows an icon for gender, profile pic, journal - and the relationstip state of the user.
Most parts of the forum do work in 800x600 without horizontal scrolling (though, the next version will require a bit more space ...).
