How To Add Drop Down Menus To Your Navbar

I think everyone has encountered the situation at some point or other where their navbar has got very cluttered and they are faced with either adding yet another navbar, or adding some dropdown menus to group some items.

This tutorial explains how to create an additional drop down menu in your navbar.

Firstly, locate in your navbar template the first instace of

    </script>

Replace Custom Menu with the title for this menu which you want displayed on your navbar and custommenu with the name that you want to give your link. Note that spaces are not to be used as this will break the connection with the actual menu.

Next, in your navbar template find

Again replace custommenu with the name given to your link. Make sure that you leave the _menu after it as this identifies it as the menu part of the link. Also replace Custom Menu again with the title that you have used for your link.

The content row should be replaced with the actual menu item that you want to have in your new drop down menu.

Repeat the code

as required to add additional links onto your menu.

If you wish to break your menu into sections like the quicklinks use then add

everywhere that you wish to add a new header.

The content added should be in the normal html format for links.



If you wish to add more than one menu, repeat the process for each one, ensuring that you use a different name for each menu otherwise they will not function correctly.

Thanks for the heads up that the first part of the template edit is in the SECOND instance not the FIRST. I'd have never figured it out without that nugget. It was driving me crazy!

Installed, looking very nice. Great template mod...

Hey, i've just followed this guide - I added the relevant code to the navbar template except for the last part with the divs, which I added to the header template (have to in my skin as that's where my actual navbar is located).

Can you highlight in red the stuff you added? I don't know what your templates used to look like so I can't tell what you added.

You've got a customized navbar and so you can't just follow the directions exactly. You should take a look at the default navbar and see what these directions are trying to tell you to do and then apply that to your custom one. Or, ask your skin designer to help you with this.

I'm not seeing the drop down menu on my forum. I have a slightly modified navbar template. I created a 2nd row (right under the default navbar). I'm trying to insert it in there and its a no-go.

I'm trying to follow the way some of the default dropdowns are working (ie. Community) and its still not working. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.....

Let me know if you want me to post my template here, if you have a minute to look thru it

Did you know there is a modification to add a second navbar?

Probably, if you need help with your navbar and the drop-down, the best place to post the code is in the main forums where more people will see it and be able to help. It's also easier to keep all your stuff in your own thread rather than have others posting their problems also in this thread. Don't forget to use the code/html/php tags when posting code.
