Newbie question - what is difference between a "template" and a "skin"?
It seems to be that "template" and "skin" get used interchangeably. Can someone explain to me what the difference is, unless there isn't one.
Thanks. |

A template is a bunch of text that can contain variables and replacements. A skin doesn't exist in vB but the closest thing is a style set which contains templates and replacements separately.

I appreciate the response, though I must admit that I only feel MORE confused!

Simplifed: templates are just text defining the page's layout. Style sets include templates, and replacements; replacements define color attributes and such. Style sets sometimes contain graphics, too, but they're not included in normal .style files that vBulletin uses.
Don't worry, I was confused to the difference about vB's templating system when I first bought vB |

A new style set with graphics.

Is there anywhere I could possibly obtain a tutorial on creating style sets

There isn't one, but it's quite straightforward. You will probably need to learn the template system, and vB's in general. After you know enough, start editing the templates to create different looks etc. and add your own touch.

Once you learn the replacments, the template system. And the funcinality of the admin cp you will be able to create awsome styles if you are good with html, graphics, and CSS. You will also learn that the default vbulletin style set wont vailidate at all

Thanks for all the help. I just got my Vbulletin license a few days ago. Spending a couple of days working with Vbulletin and template mods and hacks... I am starting to understand the difference.
This site has been a HUGE help to me. Thanks again. |
