I assume this will just be a basic if conditional I need... but I want to have a different background image in each forum (or some of them anyway). How would I go about this...

Hmm ... I am not sure which background-image you do mean actually.
Smth. that might work:

Set the background-image through a css-class, then put code in template phpinclude_start to add the necessary CSS to template headinclude.
