Default vB - Additional Email Options

Hello eveyone. I have a couple of questions around the vB email system and user notification of new threads or posts in threads.

I know when you create a forum you can specify by email address who should get notified when there is a new post or new thread. This leads me to question #1:

1. Is there any existing mod to allow you to pick user groups to notify when a new post or thread is made at a particular forum? This would be done at forum setup time, but it would be much faster than pasting in every email address individually.

2. That feature would be great, but it is not the most pressing one for me. I would like the ability, at the time of creating a new thread, to assign user groups or individual users to be notified of and auto-subscribed to that thread. My plan is to use the board to do some document distribution and have project dialog with field users and so when I would post some attachments for them to look over, I would like to auto-notify them of the posting and then keep them subscribed for the life of the thread.

I have attached a mocked up screen shot of how it might look. This is something that I would also be willing to pay for, depending on the costs, since this will be a major factor in the decision to use vB or not and since it is for some business purposes, paying is not a huge deal.

Thank you for reading and considering my questions. If answers are good, I can get vB right away and get moving on this project.

Thanks again.

Bump on this request....

If no one knows anything about an existing hack, is anyone out there willing to do some mods and at what cost? Can PM me with details.

If this forum section does not get enough traffic, can someone post a link to this in another section so some of the board gurus could take a peek and see what they think?

Thanks much.

Is there anyone I can pay to do this mod or someone who can at least quote me some rates and ballpark figures to do the mod?

Thanks much.

Dunga Bee,

concerning your mod request I am 100% with you!
Same problem here with the required feature of notification
about new posts to a group.
I am even willing to share costs with you if somebody is just
going to do write the hack !

Best regards
Jockel

I too would like to see this happen.
What I need is a system that sends out emails for each post to everyone.

I know why these questions would be asked in the pre-sales forum, but none of the really good hackers look at this forum. I hope this helps

I agree with you all that their needs to be enhanced email features.

I am not very good with hacking yet, but the way I have been able to get around this problem is to use the "Email Addresses to Notify When there is a New Thread/Post" fields in the forum manager to send a PLAIN TEXT email. You can uses the "generate mailing list" feature and copy into either of the email fields. However, there are a couple of other changes you need to make. Search for the phrase that creates the emails and change it to send the entire post or whatever you want. Also, if you want to send the emails to more than about 25 people than you will need to make changes to the database also. Use phpMyAdmin or something like it to change the "newpostemail" or "newthreademail" field from "varchar(250)" type to "mediumtext". This has worked for now. It would be nice to write a SQL statement that would automatically copy and paste the email addresses, but I haven't had time to work on it.

My site is for a social club and now the officers want to be able to send emails by posting to the "email" forum and have attachments be sent with the email. I have no idea where to start with this, but I think it has something to do with the phrases for the emails. If you can think of a way please PM me.

I hope that helped.
