Password Protecting the Registration

Since my board is realtively closed to people in my community (where I live), I was thinking about giving out passwords to people for registering.

Has anyone ever done this before? I was thinking of asking for a password on the first screen after you click register.

Not sure on where to store the password, but that doesn't really matter to me at this point.

You can stick this in register.php, right after:

if ($PHP_AUTH_USER != '[high]usernameHere[/high]' or $PHP_AUTH_PW != '[high]passwordHere[/high]') {
	header('WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="vBulletin Protected Area"');
	header('HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized');
	show_nopermission();
	exit;
}
