Copy vB forum structure to NEW domain?
We have a forum working on one domain (igotasti.com) and have bought a second copy of vB for a similar forum with a different domain (igotaevo.com). What we want to do is copy our existing forum structure and most permissions over to the new domain, so we don't have to start from scratch. Then we can delete all the posts and non-admin users.
The advice I've read has to do with moving your existing forums to a new host but not a different domain, and/or changing your domain name. What I need are some clear instructions, if there are any or anyone knows how to do this, on what steps I should follow to upload the forum structure into the new install. So far, I have downloaded a backup of the entire existing site, purchased a new vB and uploaded it onto the new site in the same relatively named directory folder ( vBforum), run the installer, but I have not restored the database because i read about a potential problem with domain cookies and perhaps other things. Any direction greatly appreciated, or, if this is a wrong headed impossible task fraught with unforseen problems and should not be attempted, please let me know that too. Thanks jeff |

I have done this on my local test forum, meaning copy the whole structure, create an empty database with same name, install VB and then restore a backup of the real DB on it with mysqldumper, and it worked perfectly. Never tried with a "real" other domain though but with "localhost" as a domain I had no problem at all.

The instructions should be identical to copying a forum to a new domain, without deleting the old forum.
Basic steps: - Upload the vBulletin software to the new domain - Copy over any files that belong to installed modifications from the old domain to the new domain. - Copy over any files that belong to installed Styles from the old to the new domain, unless you are not planning to use that style. - Restore a database backup of the old forum into a new database. - Configure the config.php to point to the new database etc. - To be sure: put tools.php from the "do_not_upload" folder in your admincp directory and run it to reset cookie domain and path. Remove tools.php again. - If you have uploaded a different version of vBulletin to the new domain then was running on the old domain, run upgrade.php. (You would never need to run install.php) - If any attachments, Avatars, etc. are stored in the filesystem, check and update pathinfo. You might need to copy over some stuff like smiley images. - Login to the AdminCP and check your settings like Forum URL, Sitename, Email addresses, etc. - Finished |
