Having problems locating something
Kind of a long story, so bare with me.
Some time ago, I was asked by a friend to basically get his forum back from an uncooperative host and webmaster after a falling out. This is the third person who has been admin to this forum, and took advantage of the owner's lack of knowledge. I managed to crash course myself enough to accomplish getting his entire forum file structure onto my computer via dreamweaver FTP, change the config file and uploaded to a new server with no major problems. Some how webmastering this forum has fallen into my lap though, and I've managed so far without too much difficulty. But now I have this problem. One of the previous web masters had installed a product. I can't find it listed anywhere. It's name is Banner rotator 0.90 Beta for VB3.5.2. I'm running 3.8.4. Although this product is still functioning fine, when I delete a banner from the list in the settings, it does not delete the "recommended link" it creates. Here is a snapshot explaining what I mean. The Beardens Burms, Burmese Python Forums, and USARK links should all be going away with their banners that were deleted. I've searched many files trying to find out where the links are being created, and have found them in the index HTML file, and the brotator files, and physically removed the code for the links, save the files, yet they still appear. I did try and install the Cyb flash image banner rotator 1.8 which should work with my version of VB, but I can't seem to make it appear in the same position as the current one, and find no setting to position it. It wants to appear in the upper right corner, and i don't want it there, so I'm back to looking for where these links are stored in the beta version. It's probably futile to even ask, but any of you more experienced VB people have a clue as to where this code might be stored so I can undo it? If needed I can copy and paste the product code to a text file and provide a link to it if it would help. Any help would be awesome. This has been a thorn in my side for some time. Thanks Rick |

I'd search the phrases (Languages & Phrases > Search in Phrases) for some of the text, like maybe "Recommended Links". If it's found, note the variable name and search the templates for that. If the phrase isn't found, search the templates for "Recommended Links".
If the links aren't found in a template, they could be put there by a plugin. You could go to the Plugin Manager and see if you can figure out from the names of the plugins which one might be doing it. |

If you've got code from old admins I would create a fresh style (Style Manager -> Add a New Style with No Parent Style) and use that going forward. It will undo any template edits the other admins may have done over the years. You'll have to do some editing to get it black like the current style but I think in the end it would be worth it to know you were starting with a more or less default style.

I hadn't thought about editing the styles. I had no idea that it might be in there. But, after reading your post, I decided to edit the current style, if for nothing else, just to view the coding. And what do you know. There was all that code from the brotator file, along with the links it created. Deleted the code for those links, and saved and reloaded, and VIOLA! No more links.
Thanks for setting me in the right direction. I'll have to upload a new banner soon, and didn't want to run out of room for the link that goes with it. Seems to me like you would be able to edit the product code to auto delete any links that it created, or that it SHOULD be coded that way. It's a little advanced for my untrained mind, but I almost want to try and remedy that malfunction. Anyway, problem solved! Thanks a lot. Rick |
