*Bump*
<a href="https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=255618" target="_blank">https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=255618</a>
Auto-merging is so ridicules. I feel like I'm being "parented" here for when it's my turn to raise my hand. Especially when I want to add a thought to a thread like above but nobody sees it. I've never noticed "bumping" out of hand and if it was then a mod could PM the person that they are over-doing it, merge it themselves or something. Otherwise the solution is to just start a new pointless thread like this one which just leads to forum pollution. Here is my "question" for this thread then. Is there a way to disable this so that my users don't have this kind of bad experience? Please also see my thread above as I'm totally stuck from a design point of view until I get some idea of a solution. Thanks! |

No, the solution is not to start another "new pointless thread", the solution is to wait patiently for somebody to answer your thread.
I don't understand your question though "Is there a way to disable this so that my users don't have this kind of bad experience?" Disable what? If you are talking about the auto-merge, then you don't have to disable it since it is a modification we use here on this site. |

I PM'd Lynn and she was kind enough to reply back on the discussion.
Bottom line is that my thread question is answered by her post above as I didn't realize that this was a mod. I thought all vBulletin forums had this now as I've ran into it before. But apparently mine won't do auto-merging by default so we are good. Additional posts are allowed after 24 hours which is fair for *bumps* My only problem with the whole system on this forum is that I wasn't originally trying to bump a thread but add additional info to it. Maybe those who viewed my thread and continued on without answering would have now been able to answer based on the new information provided. But they would never revisit that thread because they don't know additional information was provided. Being a support forum this happens often I'd assume so it's too bad that the system auto-merges in these cases. I guess in a perfect world the vBulletin system would re-bold threads or put an obvious status icon indicating that new information has been added to a thread. Without repositioning that thread back to the top of the list as to avoid the *bump* issue. |

I don't know what we can really do about users adding additional information. That is far rarer than users trying to bump posts, thus the mod. Some users expect an answer instantly or they try to bump the post, or they get upset when the post gets to the second page and they try to bump the post. Those are the reasons we had to add the mod in the first place. It isn't often that someone wants to bump the post because they have additional information to add.

when I was googling how to disable it (before I posted) I had run across many people complaining about the additional info thing just as I have (not trying to bump). A few of them from this forum in fact.
Although I'm sure that bumping within 24 hours is a major issue and reason to implement such a feature. I'm just saying that "in a perfect world" it would be nice to have a feature that addressed both situations in a "fair" way. All the way around remembering that I didn't realize that it was only a 24 hour block for those trying to *bump*... Thanks! |

The Bumping action are done via mod. If you look through the mod forum you will see that there are quite a few bumping mods. Some of them merge posts but move them to the top. Some move the bumped threads lower for punishment. To be honest, it is your choice to do what you want on your forum. You can code a mod that does bumping any way you want.
