whatever code defines the footer container (the box that holds the footer links, style dropdown, etc.) does not seem to have a stylevar to change the border color and thickness.

I'm new to Firebug. I have been able to determine that the default border is 1px color #435769 but I can't figure out where to change this value.

can someone please tell me how to change these elements?

and possibly tell me how I could have figured this out in Firebug?

Try the footer_border stylevar.
