So this renders based on your user's friend's activities if they are logged into FaceBook.

How do you do this with a variable width widget at 100%, instead of a fixed pixel width?

Any help would be appreciated!

You should call it sidebar block and not widget because widgets are only used in the cms!
These are 2 different symstems!
