Do a Search in Templates for "profile_right_first" and it should show up.

I tried that but it just showed it as part of the following in the MEMBERINFO template:
<div id="sidebar_container"> <!-- sidebar --> $template_hook[profile_right_first] $blocks[stats_mini] $template_hook[profile_right_mini] $blocks[friends_mini] $blocks[albums] $template_hook[profile_right_album] $blocks[groups] $blocks[visitors] $template_hook[profile_right_last] <!-- / sidebar --> </div> =/ |

Yeah, that's where it is. If you want to add something to it, you would create a plugin and insert text into the template by using that hook:

What hook location would I choose?

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you are doing something on the member.php page, then you may want to look at that page and see what hooks are available around where you want to add in something.
