Who's Online -Why does Resolve IP work erratically?

Running vB 3.8.4 on a Virtual Server.
Who's Online Resolve IP Addresses Admin profile set to "No"

Problem:
From page: http://www.domainname.com/online.php...e&pp=20&page=1

The page always loads without the IP addresses resolving - which is fine (as per the admin setting noted above)

When I click on any of the IP addresses beside current users, it usually resolves the IP address to the ISP name and location pretty quickly.

But sometimes (and more frequently as of late) they don't resolve - I'm assuming it's just timing out. None on the whole page resolve when I click on them, even though I know should be able to at least see the entry for my own ISP (e.g. my own entry in the table using an ISP that always resolves normally)

I'm assuming the reverse DNS routine called by http://www.domainname.com/online.php...=66.249.65.253 (AJAX powered?) needs some service running on my server that must be going offline? Or it depends on a name server table hat must be profiled somewhere?

Anyone know what makes this work normally, and what might cause the resolving feature to not work sometimes, yest still work other times?
