php drop down box issue.

basically i created 9 drop down boxes and populated them with 9 teams from a table in a voting database i created. when you hit submit it goes to the update.php page. what i am trying to do is get the value from each of those boxes and compare them to make sure they are not the same value and then submit the value to the database. my problem is no matter what i do it always gives the message "You can not have the same team in multiple fields. Please go back and reselect the teams." so obviously the value isnt storing properly. here is how i have the first page.

i didnt include each box in the example cuz you get the idea. obviously i am doing some wrong but i am not 100% sure what. im trying to make box 1 give a value in say field 1 and then box 2 give a value in field 2 and then compare to make sure they arent the same value after i hit submit.

any help would be appreciated.
