Default Problem using search!

Hello all,

I hate to complain about much of anything, but whenever I am doing searches I often get an improper response.

Today I was searching for a mod to mark as installed, the title is 'UserGroups Legend In Forumhome' but after hitting the search all mods or any option really, it tells me...
Quote:
The search term you specified (In) is under the minimum word length (3) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

Now I can understand the system interpreting a "pasted" search term as a single entity, however this occurs even when i have typed it in myself, and even when changing case to ensure FireFox isn't pulling for the cached previous terms used.

Any ideas here? I would hate to be using a mod and not mark it installed for the developer, and this isn't the only one tis has happened with, so there are a few mods i am using that i cannot find to mark as installed because the plug-in page links are either not there, or set to bring me to the forum post in the mods section as the others i am using did.

Thanks for any input offered for what I may be failing to do right!

TSG!

Take the word 'IN' out and search again.

If you read the error it tells you 'in' was not long enough to search for. Three letters.

You can either take out "in", or wrap the whole phrase in double-quotes. By wrapping in double-quotes, MySQL will search for the entire phrase instead of for each word.

Ok I will try these variations, I was interpreting it as only considering the word 'in' and ignoring the rest as if it wasn't there because NONE of those words were responded to in the results.

I thought a word that was too short would be excluded from the search term instead of making the entire term invalid! Is this something new? I remember on the board I moderated on v3.7 it would state that words less than three letters or very common would be excluded from the rest of the search term but produce results none the less, of course minus the particular short or common word.
so I will try using the double (()) and report back if I continue to get such responses!

Thanks to you both for responding!

I have previously written a modification called "Continue Search" that does exactly that. This functionality has been included by default as of vBulletin 3.7.

So you are saying this could have been utilized in my search for the mod author despite my search terms? I just missed seeing that option?

Huh? You mentioned how words smaller than the limit are excluded from the search. I simply responded to that.

I'm sorry, I am becoming confused now, and as much as I hate to be bothersome, is it possible to spell this out for me or point me to a thread that would clarify my confusion?

What I have gotten so far from the responses is, I should be able to "continue search, despite the small word. but that is not what my experience was, as quoted above, if what you say, that being your original mod, has been integrated in to vBulletin since v-3.7 then why would I even get a short word rejection of my six word search term? Rather than return an error stating the search term was invalid because the word 'in' was less than three letters, ignoring the rest of the words in the search term?

also when I said above

I was asking if there is a need to click on an icon r word to continue this particular search despite the terms containing a word less than three letters, did that not come across as such? My apologies of this was the case.

In any event, all I need to know at this point is how can I search for mod authors whose product I have installed, to mark them as such, with out incurring the forbidden use of small or common words?
Thank you very much for your patience, remember we all do not code in server side languages all the time like some of you guys do, and I know in my own profession, it is not uncommon for well seasoned and experienced people to not realize how little frame of reference for understanding even the simplest aspects of what they are just learning about, because those with experience have forgotten just how alien some new things they are trying to learn, can be for newbies.

This is not meant as a criticism, but rather more of a request to respectfully drop it down a few levels so some of us "little people" can grasp what is being communicated, since talking in lingo tends to make things even more difficult.

I have noticed in many first posts after mods are released, the word "reserved" what does that refer to? This is an example of what i am saying, you all know what those posts or the people posting mean y it, i haven't a clue yet nor can find the purpose through out the hundreds of mods i have browsed through, and I have been using vB for over three years (SM on another board for a few years) now in some capacity or other, but this is my first owned license using it, so this end of it is less familiar to me!

Once again I really do appreciate the time you have put in to both the responses to my post, and the development of the many mods you have released to date, and offered for no more than someone actually buying a license to use the main forum software.

Do not doubt my appreciation for even a second, if my post sounds like I am saying otherwise.

You shouldn't search for words less than 4 characters long. What was said that in vBulletin 3.7.0 or higher, shorter words would be dropped. This site is running 3.6.X not 3.7.0 or higher. This site therefore does not have that functionality and it shouldn't have even been brought up. To make it as simple as possible for your needs, do not search for words that have less than 4 characters.

If you mark a modification as installed, you can return to that list by clicking on "User CP" at the top of the page and selecting "Installed Modifications" from the dropdown list.

The word reserved in the first reply simply means the author has reserved that post for their own future purposes.

Thanks Wayne that clears up a whole lot, I never even realized this forum wasn't the latest version LOL!

So THAT"S why I found so much of what was responded to so confusing.

For the record though, it was finding those developers posts to mark them as installed once I actually got that far, credit given where credit due, you know?
Thanks,
You Rock!
