UKBL ~ "Save As Homepage" Button
There are loads of bookmark us hacks and add to social sites, but would you like your members to save your forum as their Homepage, as opposed to just a link in their favorites
Works only with Internet Explorer at the moment a second file with a Text Link based alternative is now available for Firefox in the downloads section
Just a quickie here, when i did a search earlier for a hack which would let me save my site as my homepage, i couldn't find any, but now we'll be able to give that option to all our members, with a Make your Forum a Homepage Button.
Its a very small but effective script which sites quitely in your styles footer template, and produces a nice button which members will be dying to click.
Now your members will not have an excuse not to visit your forum when they switch on their PC
So, what do we do ??
This is really easy..
Download the bookmark.zip file and in there you'll see bookmark.txt, Just open this file in Notepad and look for the following
Code:
<input type="button" value="Make UKBusinesslive your Home Page"
Thats the Button Description, Replace "UKBusinesslive" with the name of your forum,
Then you need to work alone a bit until you see the following....
Then save, next you need to copy and paste the script to the footer of the style that your using. That will add the button to the footer of your site, you can of course experiment and add it where you want, but i think the footer is a safe bet
Thats it, told you it was a quickie
For Firefox Users
The second Zip file Bookmark for Firefox.zip is a text based link which will work with either IE or Firefox, But will only save your Page to the favorites. as with the above, Just open the file in notepad and edit my details for yours
Now you can chose one or the other or both
Click install if you use and i'll support you 100%
It is a shame that its not possible to make something like this that works for all browsers, it would be a neat feature to have.
With Javascript you cannot add the save as homepage to Firefox, it just won't work, unless theres some some add on from mozilla to allow this, You can give your members the 2nd option, and save as bookmark.
However i'm still looking at this, so watch this space
Have you considered hiding the button from firefox? (And vice versa) The javascript is just a google away.
I see it on your site and can click it but it doesn't add a bookmark. People might think they've bookmarked you, leave then a few days later think 'oh i'll go back to that site I bookmarked', and to their absolute horror discover they hadn't bookmarked you at all.

Thanks for that, still shows IE on top, I think hiding it in firefox and vice versa is the way to go, i will look into this and edit the code accordinly.
