Hi, I was recently hacked, I was planning on moving to a new dedicated server soon anyway so I thought I would do it now, just in case the hackers still have access to my old server.

I am moving from a Linux server, to a windows 2003. and i want to do a clean install of VB, the skins and mods etc, just so i am sure I am not just placing the hackers files on my new server. Which i figure is a posibility if I just copy the file structure from one server to the other.

What is the best way to do this move? And will I be able to install VB on the new server whilst its still running on the old one? An idiots guide the the process would be appreciated by this idiot, thanks in anticipation.

If you want to create a completely clean board with the posts/users/etc., use ImpEx to import the data. See the manual: ImpEx Import System.

You will have to close off the old forum and create a backup of that database for use with ImpEx on the new server.

So is importing the data from a backup using ImpEx, safer than simply installing a backup of the database onto the new server?

Or is this something to do with moving from Linux to Windows, I will be using mysql community.

You said you wanted a completely clean install with no mods, styles, etc. but with posts/users/threads intact. ImpEx makes this happen.

Ahh I see what you mean. I was thinking of rather than just copying the backed up file structure and database from one server to the other. I would reinstall VB and all the mods, and them use the backed up DB. I just don't want to copy any files the hacker might have hidden on my server over to the new one.

Would this be OK?

Only installing fresh new files is always good thing if you have security concerns.
