Default What is the recommended maximum number of forums?

I am using vB's RSS Feed Manager to put external RSS-feeds sorted into different topics. Each topic has it's own forum. Each topic may have sub-topics etc.

It works like a charm but I am getting worried that it might be some sort of upper limit for how many forums I can have before the system starts to be sluggish or worse.

What is the common wisdom about this? Can I have 1000 forums? 5.000? 10.000? etc

Would be happy for answer!!

Based on an average amount of usergroups, most servers will do fine (if enough memory available) with up to 1.500 forums.

Hi Marco!

Thanks for quick reply !!

...and if I would go over 1.500 to say 2.500...it MAY be slower but it wouldn't suddenly "crash"...? Whatever happens, it will happen step by step rather than suddenly...or?

(I have dedicated server and already have redundant memory, if necessary I can put in more.)

You will most likely get into "crash" problems.

In theory if you throw enough hardware at something in theory you could handle alot of forums however note that guy does not have 10k forums.

Sherlock , I just want to know the the real limits - in good time - before I reach the level of serious problems and have to throw away work already done.....

I have a few hundred now, but yea, it could easily get up to thosands.

I am currently looking for the best way to manage a multi game portal. To date I've only managed single purpose forum with main category + sub category only.

I was checking out that huge German portal and I noticed if you go to his main page it says its running on vb 3.6.7:
http://forum1.onlinewelten.com

But if you go to a sub forum, it says its running on vb 3.7.2.
http://forum1.onlinewelten.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1922

What's the suggested structure?

D
