Paid Membership/Subscriptions Challenge

I think I've hit a brick wall ...

I'm aiming to run our forum so that it is only for paid-up members of our organisation. Accordingly, I've imported users, set up an annual paid subscription and custom membership fields. So, I can now actually manage existing users pretty effectively.

The problem is how do I make *new* members pay their subscription during registration? I'd like new members to be able to register and pay the subscription *before* they can access the forums? Is there a neat way I can achieve this, without hacking the forum code?
