Default Upgrading to 3.7 & moving to dedicated server - anything I should know?

Hi Folks,

I thought I would take this upgrade opportunity to move from our struggling shared hosting to a dedicated server.

I haven't used a dedicated server before, or 3.7, so I will be chucked in at the deep end, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice, or useful links that may help my transition.

I also run VBSEO, if that makes a difference.

Thanks muchly

Dave.

Will your dedicated server be managed, or un-managed?

Once moved make sure and look @ your folders where avatars/attachments/profile images/ ect are stored and CHMOD 777. Many times on a server move the folders will not have the correct permissions to read / write.

Also update /path/to/your/files .
- different server has different paths (usaly)

Managed. It seems the sensible way to do it, especially with my limited server skills

Thanks for that

Luckily, I will be able to keep the site on the current hosting untill it is all set up and working, so I can take my time.

Any more suggestions welcome thank you

Well, the company that is managing it for you should also be able to take care of migrating your stuff, unless otherwise stated by them.

Your host should move your files for you. Some may even upgrade for you but that is unlikely.

Hi Dave,
Can I ask which host you decided to go with?

Some points you might want to check:

Which versions of php and mysql are default and you may want to go for the latest stable releases.

Also check which version of apache is on (1 or 2).

Regards
Bob

Considering Apache 2 was released over 6 years ago, one would think he is running Apache 2

If your old server and your new server have different versions of PHP + MySQL, make sure that after you migrate you go through your site and look for errors, just in case.
