Default Reverse Ignore for users

It would be useful if there could be another aspect to the buddy and ignore list, and that would be a 'reverse ignore' feature - meaning a member could block another member from seeing their posts.

I have situations where people have ex-boyfriends or husbands come to the site, and they don't want them reading their posts - so they want to be able to put that person's username on a 'list', and then this person can not see any of their posts. So their posts are hidden to only those members they specify, but everyone else can still see them like normal.

Also helpful for when members get into fights, and don't want their ex-friend reading their posts (this is usually temporary, but it makes it easier for the members as they recover from their tiffs)

Of course if a member quotes one of their posts, the blocked person is going to be able to see what the person posted in the quote, but there's not much way around that..

Interesting idea, although I don't know how you would keep up on updating the users and turning it off and on. The there is always the idea that they could use that for the wrong reasons as talking about someone and knowing they would not be able to respond to it. I take it your site has a lot of young people?

The other problem is that if that the person your have on "reverse ignore" could simply register another username and then read the posts. So, there is a very easy way around this feature.

And users will figure out ways to beat it and abuse it. They seem to behave more with the way it is now.

Yep! (lol). Some of them have a lot of time on their hands and want to worry about blocking this person or that person from reading their posts. And yes, users can just create another username and then they'd have to block that - but if we noticed a person doing that over and over, (keep making new usernames to get around the block) then that would be validation to the staff that there might be a valid harassment or stalking issue, whereas at the point, the staff would step in and warn or ban the user who keeps following the other user around.

This would allow the people who are either mad at each other, or who suspect it's someone stalking them, to feel in control and block the people themselves first, and so it's less work for the staff. The minor tiffs can be handled by the users, and the true issues can be identified easier by staff with this add-on.

I would hope you could use the buddy list area in the user cp, so the user can just go in and block or unblock the person just like you make a buddy or put someone on your ignore list now.

PS - since there is also already a mod around called "Forced Ignore" whee admins can step in and make two users ignore each other, I think there is a legit need for this ability. This lets a person 'force ignore' someone who is bothering them on their ow, without the need for the mods to get involved.

and what about the 'ignore a thread' hack? We have a long history here of giving users the ability to ignore things they get irritated by..

I agree. I currently use a mod where people on someone's ignore list can't post to threads started by that person- that is good but this would be better.
