Leveraging groups within vBulletin

I currently run two vBulletin forums and don't use the 'usergroup' functionality that much, but I am about to start a third vBulletin forum for a client that has a specific need to address users that register specific information that will identify them as members of one or more groups.

Can the initial registration procedure be tailored to force regsitrants to be associated with one or more usergroups?

I see that Public User Groups can be joined at a later date by registered users.

That's exactly what I need, but I also need people to join at least one group at the time of first registration.
