Hi peeps

As the title says, How fast should we be able to download on a 100mbit connection, thats what i upgraded to last night for my server, it used to be 10mb, My PC connection is 10mb and it maxes out at about 1.2mb (1200kb) a second....

When i download a 10mb off my server its between 300kb and 400kb a second, this tells methat it aint 100mbit speed, am i correct as surely i should be able to download (if i had the connection) at 120mb a second for 100mbit, at least it should max my download speed at 1.2mb am i correct in saying this?

Does this give you the impression that it has not been updated yet?

It doesn't matter how fast the server connection is, you won't go any faster than the slowest link between you and it (so even if it were 100M all the way to ntl, your connection is 10M, so you cannot go any faster than that).

If you are only getting 300KBytes/sec then it could be that the links from ntl to the server are slow (or just very busy) - is it in the US by any chance ? It could also be congestion on your local UBR (oh, and ntl's proxy servers are not always as fast as they could be either ).

BTW a 100Mbit connection is about 12M bytes/sec, not 120.

Hi again Paul lol

Yep its in the US, I can downlod frommost sites and newsgroups at just a fraction over 1.2mb so a 100mbit server should be maxing out my connection.
I also know there aint many online on my UBR at present

Not only that i just downloaded a file well over 1gb say and that was coming down on average 1189kb per second, so i dont have anything impedeing my connection at my end...

Do a ping or tracert to your server and see the route it is taking/ response times.

There could be endless posibilties as to why you're only getting those slow speeds, chances are good its somewhere between your connection from home/wherever to the server though.

you also have to remember that a lot of the time your internet connection isnt used to its full amount simply because it allows for other traffic, im on 8 mb/s and ive never had more than 1.3 mb/s on a download, but if i start another download it doesnt impede upon this, they both run at about a meg a second...

Maybe you arent really on a 100mbit connection for your server.

Ask your hosting company for some test IPs so everyone can test their download speed
