Modifications and settings for big boards?

I have a forum that is quickly reaching 100+ new members per day and averaging 100-300 members online.

For performance issues:

What modifications should I have installed? What modifications should I avoid?

I'm running a dual 2.8 xenon 1gb ram dedicated server and I had to turn off:

Members online in the past 24 hours
Members online in threadview
Members online in forumview

Members online in forum home is still enabled and things are running fine. What else should I be doing?

Upgrading to 2 Gb RAM would also help.

But I would also make sure no-cache headers are OFF. Similar threads is OFF. Using full-text searching. Threadviews not updated instantly. Add index to the ipaddress column in post table. I personally disable Who's Online.

Running this MySQL query:

ALTER TABLE `post` ADD INDEX `ipaddress` ( `ipaddress` )

Another thing suggested to me was Style and Language Settings > Store CSS Stylesheets as Files? > Yes

Can somebody explain what "Add index to the ipaddress column in post table" actually does and how it saves server load?

If you do that then make sure the vbulletin_css folder (inside the clientscript folder) is writable.
