Request: vb.org version of the gnu
I started to write out a really long and well thought out post but I changed my mind and decided to keep this simple.
I think it would be benificial to the creators of mods and styles and to the people that use them if we could devise our own version of the GNU liscence for use here on vb.org. EverythingVB had something like it and alot of authors here started using it until the site vanished. It could even be something as simple as saying that yes, users can provide updates for hacks but those updates can only be provided here on vb.org and no where else. Or yes, users can provide an update if the original author can't be reached after a good faith attempt to do so. Now I understand that some people release "lite" versions of thier commerical software and thats fine, this can be optional for those who want to use it. |

we need something solid as a license, so nobody will be able to tell "i did not see any license!" |

My thought has always been that people can provide updates to mods as long as they keep it in the original mod's thread and not try to start a new thread and gain credit for installs. Nothing stops anybody from providing updates or fixes. It's the whole credit-hog thing that gets people in trouble.

amykhar - I think its allowed or maybe overlooked when its for small stuff but if it was an update from like 3.0 to 3.5, then I think it would be deleted even if it was posted in the original thread. Maybe a staff member here could clarify that but either way, it makes it next to impossible for an end user to locate what they need. I agree with you on the credits thing though.

Yes. This is an excellent idea.

Bad idea. Hack authors can release code under any license they want. If you impose that sort of license you are going to see a lot of hacks being removed and less hacks being created.

its a free site people if you really care about the coding your creating here dont do it. your offering code to the public. if ya really want to protect your coding and creations dont offer them on a free site. i always thought this community was here for coders who enjoyed coding and making there forum better to give back and help others do the same without the abilty. as Far as anyone else taking your hack releasing there own version whoopie who really cares. If your mod / hack / addition was top of the line best it could be then even if someone rereleased it others would realize your the better coder. as long as someone isnt grabbing your complete code and then zipping it (removing any lines that have a copyrite or Coding BY so and so.) i dont see it a big deal.. Because one person does a shoutbox dont mean someone else cant design a shoutbox thats different from yours. in some way..
And if someones jacking your complete code and you know it i am sure you can report it and the mods would take a look and if its identicle theres would be removed from the site |
