NOTE:
This modification works for all versions of vBulletin.

DESCRIPTION:
Imagine if you could monitor every time someone copies and pastes something off your site. To make it even better, what if you can insert a backlink when you text is pasted somewhere else. It?s a great way for attribution, tracking what content is popular, and gaining some inbound links.

Tynt Insight allows you to do this. It?s a free service and there is even a slick reporting dashboard. You simply signup, generate your unique bit of JavaScript and insert it into your site.

Each time a user pastes content from your forum into an email, blog or website, Tynt automatically adds an URL link back to your site?s original content. When someone clicks that URL, they are directed back to your site and see the original content.

This drives incremental traffic to your site when your content is shared without your knowledge while maintaining a consistent user experience. Make link-backs to your content effortless for readers and gain new insight into user engagement with Tynt Insight. With this modification, you can bring up to 40% more visitors to ceratin pages on your forum.

INSTALLATION GUIDE:

1) Register your domain;
2) Go to "Link setup" and customize your attribution link;
3) Click on "Get your script" to get the code;
4) Go to your forum admin panel > Open Styles & templates > Edit header > paste the code on top of everything > Save.

Optionally, you can test the code here, or try it out yourself!

VIDEO DEMO:
You can find the video demo here.

The con is, as you pointed out, it adds that hash code to your links which I don't like so I don't use that option.

There would be no way for tynt to know at the time info is copied if the user intends to paste it internally or not so it will never be able to disable itself for internal linking.

What would be possible would be a mod that scans all new posts for internal links and removes the hash if found but considering the limited use it may be hard to convince someone to make it.

A mod like AME (Automatic Media Embedder) could probably do this with the right settings.

Thanks ...

I'm not sure this thing is adding that much value anyway, but I'll kill that "address bar" option for now and see what happens....

Doug

In the last 7 days it says:

Content has left your site: 94 times
16 new visits
88 pageviews
22 new links

I really don't understand how they calculate the amount of times content has left the site- the act of copying and pasting can't possibly "trigger" anything for them to count.

This isn't a new idea, it's a script that's been around for a while.
I ran it on my site for the last year, I found it from the desiel guy post on my old forum which was sold november of 09, so it's not exactly a new idea

Even though it's hosted on their site, any script you add to your forum will infact slow it down some
This is true with any script you add, even google analytics.

Even though it says 22 new links were made, it isn't exactly true.
If I was to simply go to your site and highlight, and control+c a chunk of text, it would show as a new link, even if I never pasted it on my site.

I actually removed this mod, I don't think it helped me much. Plus it was annoying when I would copy and past info from one thread to another on my site, it would show as a new link..

I removed this script because the slowness added to my site wasn't worth the few links it would pick up.

By all means, don't take my word for it, try it for yourself.
Maybe it'll be a good fit for your websites. (this isn't directed at anyone I quoted, just in general)

Upon reflection and looking at the stats I was getting, I agree... :up:

I think it's one of those "glossy" marketing things that sounds like a good idea, but lacks the right kind of implementation.

Anyway .. un-installed ..

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone ...

Regards,
Doug

FYI, I've had this installed for many years. In the last few days I noticed links in posts were no longer opening in a new tab, they would open in the current tab taking the user away from my forum. After a bunch of trouble shooting I finally tracked down the problem to the JavaScript supplied by tynt.com. I removed it and my links open in new tabs again.

Hopes this helps anyone with the same issue.
