vbF Journal
Article Publishing Module
by

1.- Credit goes to:
  1. MicroHellas, as this module has developed by her.
  2. Olympic, for his corrections to secure this module according to vB's standards.
2.- General information
  • This module is mainly for use for Article posting with 1 photo. Unlike vbNews and vbArticles which are using 3nd party HTML editor, vbJurnal uses vB's Editor.
  • Editors choice Articles
  • Breaking Articles
  • Important Articles
  • RSS per category
  • Newest Articles by category
  • Most Active Authors (according to the number of post Articles)
  • All these blocks can be turn off in case that you don't need them, by setting 0 as the number of appearing articles
  • All these blocks are following the active category. eg Breaking news in main page shows articles from all categories. Breaking news while you're in X category shows breaking news from X category only.
3.- Installation
  1. Open vbjournal.php file with a text editor like notepad. At line 9 you'll find a variable: $mydateformat = 'm/d/Y'; This is set to default US date format. You can change it according to your country's setting eg. for UK d/m/Y or for other European countries to d.m.Y or d-m-Y. You can also add the time if you want. eg 'd/m/Y H:ia' this will give 20/8/2007 14:15pm. The reason that I didn't used the internal vbdate function is because that some users from Scandinavian countries, Spain and France had problems with vbdate().
  2. Upload the contains of /forum directory to the same directory where you've installed vBulletin. Please note that if you've another vbF module already installed, you'll get a message for file "loading.gif" that already exists. Don't worry. You can skip or overwrite it as it's the same image.
  3. CMOD following directories to 777
    1. /photos (inside vbjournal directory)
    2. /tmp (inside vbjournal directory)
    3. /thumbs (inside vbjournal/photos directory)
  4. For security reasons backup your database AND turn your board off
  5. Check at your AdminCP->vBulletin Options->Plugin/Hook System that Plugin system is enabled.
  6. From your AdminCP->Plugin System->Manage Products choose Add/Import Product and import the product: product_vbjournal.xml
  7. If you want to add a link to your nav bar then you must edit the NAVBAR template:
    1. Search For:
      Code:
      <td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>
    2. Add Below:
      Code:
      <td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="vbjournal.php$session[sessionurl_q]">Journal</a></td>
....or use any other word you want.
  8. By default none usergroup has permissions to use vbjournal, so you need to give permissions to any group. Goto AdminCP->Usergroups->Usergroup Manager and edit any usergroup you like to give permissions.
  9. In your adminCP, under vbJournal, choose vbJournal options and configure it depending on your needs. If you can't see vbJournal's menu, press F5 to refresh the page, or logout and login again to your admincp.
  10. Now, you can access vbJournal at: www.youdomain.com/vb_installation/vbjournal.php

One question though... Aren't images in the "Breaking News" section supposed to be scaled down? Mine stay the same size as the originals. They are scaled down in the right side column though.

Small thing but I was just wondering (don't remember if they were before or not). A great mod
I found the bug As I copied the code for image manipulation from another mod, in 3 instances I forgot to rename vbjengine to vbjournal, so the mod was trying to find settings from vbFEngine. I apologize for my novice mistake. Please upload the attach file.

Oh wow works great now!

Great support and work Nominated this Mod for Mod of the Month

I was about to post an issue I was having where uploaded images looked a bit "uglier" (lower quality) after I uploaded them. But that fixed it! (Also of course fixed the "images not resizing" issue of course )

Thank you so very much and I look forward to any new updates you have planned

Just checking. In the screenshot above, 'Breaking News' is actually 'Latest News'? Am I right?

And can the 'Member Menu' be invisible to registered user? I only want Moderators and Admins to be able to post something.

There is seperate block "Newest News". Breaking News and Important News, are articles marked as "Breaking" or "Importants", from those who have permissions to Moderate.

Each menu option is visible only to those who have permissions for that action. If all options are "Off" for the current user, then the whole block is invisible. This is the way that as I remember it works. But even if it's not, you can easily do it as you like by adding in the template:
Code:
<if condition="$permissions[vbjournal] & $vbulletin->bf_ugp[vbjournal][canmod]">
....
</if>

By the way, the screenshot looks similar to the vBnews version, What are the differences between the two?

Just the screenshoot it's similar. vbNews has 10x features than vbJournal. Some of them:
  • Uses HTML Editor and not vbEditor. This has plus and minus. Everything is depending on admin's needs.
  • Has subcategories
  • Supports Attahcments, Chapters and/or Pagination for long articles like books or Tutorials
  • and others that really I can't remember right now. Don't forget that it's not a mod that I developed, so I can't remember it's features.
But everything is depending on your special needs. For example I'm designing our new site based on vbFJournal. I don't need subcategories, I don't need chapters etc etc.

When you click on a category like vbjournal.php?do=category&categoryid=2 if u look at the left column the categories are not populating the table. I glanced at the code and didn't see what was wrong.
