I setup the permissions so that the user can only see his own threads/posts. Then I gave the user the permissions to delete or move their own threads. The only thing it doesn't do is auto-save the posts- that is that part that needs a plugin. As for keeping the mod clean and simple, if it were me I would have the plugin create a forum which is not visible and just use permissions to setup the forum like I explained. Then you could add a link in the User CP or even a popup link in the new thread template that would display the contents of that hidden drafts forum. The user would only see their own posts and threads so to the end user it would be a seemless method. It's a place to start anyways, I'd love to code it but my focus is on a much larger project right now. Ok so there were a lot of reasons why I couldn't get it to work, but now I know how to transfer data between iframe and parent it looks like I've got it.
Hold that thought...
