So what should I tell my hosting company to upgrade?

I just called them and ripped someone a new Ahole and told them to get their act together and to upgrade their php. They said they will get right on it.

What new technology? GIF Write support was in GD before but was removed because of the patent and added back last year.

Must have been, gif write works fine in vbgarage.

i dunno, i was like expecting a flood of software that people had been holding onto due to the patent.
