I don't think of it as selfish. Anyway, thanks...I really wouldn't like the idea of releasing it without your blessing on the matter. Maybe now I'll look at touching it up a bit for release again.

" Any thing I release will be on a case by case basis and most likely contracted and invoiced work. While this may seem selfish and greedy, it is the only way I can support my customers properly."

Ya Wayne,

Kind of like the news script that never came about. Many wanted it, but it didn't materialize. Even if it would have been something that could have been purchased many would have bought it. The thread finally died out I guess with everyone wanting.

Better off never mentioning anything if it is never going to materialize. I've had a custom script written since that point. Glad I didn't wait, it would have never came. I would much rather see a post like this that outright says "MONEY". At least we know where we stand.

Actually, I released the only news script I said I was going to, it was a update of BFC_Weblog. I also mentioned that I would not be working on it further because vBPortal filled the need I was working to fill and I don't like re-inventing the wheel.

The only hack that was not publicly released that I said I was working on was a premier subscription hack but others released their own versions as well and I got bogged down and we are going a new direction at SitePoint, though the hack has been installed there since June.

This was very nice. I do however wonder how many didn't release news scripts because one was coming or at least something that was being looked into and at most planned.

"SitePoint's CMS is currently undergoing some changes that will allow it to be easier to format articles (WYSIWYG) as well as distribute pages better for portable devices like WAP and Avant Go.

After this, it may be made available to the public as a high-end product at the low-end price.

Any thoughts or ideas?"

Well that isn't a news hack... Actually vBulletin is kind of a "add-on to it".

However progress is still being made on this and development is in progess. The Java interface is up to beta 0.9.2 and is being programmed by Kevin Yank. I guess I should have mentioned that this wouldn't have been released before 2002 anyway but I was actually looking for ideas on what people would want.

The product would be directed to compete with products like Atomz Publish which retails for $10,000 and up though we are looking in the $1000 to $5000 range. In order to charge that it needs to be perfect. This also entails rewriting our entire backend engine which is pretty sophisticated because it includes all sorts of tracking features.

There will probably also be a line of tools that can be used separately that will range from $19.95 to a couple hundred bucks.

This is not something I am writing nor did I ever mean to say I was writing it. It a large project involves a number of technologies including PHP, Java Applets, Server-Side Java, Windows Applications, MySQL and Postgre SQL.

Well,

That's fine. Just would have been nice if you would have filled everyone in on it. Last thread was months ago and the last question was by me. WLuke??????. Nevertheless, I have what I need for now. A grand would have been fine and the person who started the thread mentioned that they were looking for a CMS within that price range. Now I see it will be $1000-$5000. So basically what you are saying is that the project has been expanded, will take more time, and will cost more. When you posted on the project in that thread, I just took it that the CMS (News Script) would be for commercial sites for around a grand. This is what was being asked for. Something between the free scripts and the outrageous high end news/web management progs. High end at a low cost sounded fine. Since that time I don't believe anyone has attempted a true CMS that would be compatible with vBulletin. Not in a hack nor in an "add-on".

"I guess I should have mentioned that this wouldn't have been released before 2002."

Ugh, Yes. Would have been more than nice.

Moving on..... Take care.

Hooper: what did you end up going with? What did anyone end up going with?

I am still trying to decise if i should use LinksSQL. (I know, I am slow) It works fine, but is a little awkward. It is always awkward when you appropriate one script and use it as another. I would be so happy with a system linke MArticle, written as well and as easy to use as vB.

Anyway, what did you use for content management, publishing system?

I had a PHP programmer write us a script that would allow vBulletin to input information and output it to php pages. This seems to work fine for what we are doing. It has a page numbering system as well as page deviding and a bunch more bells and whistles. So when you want to have a page break within an article produced with vBulletin, you break it and it auto numbers pages 1 through an infinite number. All template driven etc... and so on.

The site I have now isn't a news site. But I wanted a way to have a sitenews section or what have you without spending ten grand on it. PHPnews and all those programs seem to be a we bit flawed. I installed phpnews and had nothing but trouble with it. You have to remember that they are free to use though and there are no guarantees with any of it.

I'm not sure what to tell you really. There are a few news type scripts around here but they aren't very good. I pretty much tried what you will find here. You may want to hire a programmer to give you what you want. They will do it. Most likely for a grand or less. Make sure you know what you expect it to do. Give them exact instructions as to how you want it to function. I was willing to pay whatever was necessary, but I found that that using vBulletin to produce news output does just fine. In fact, with this last release of vBulletin, I've noticed an even faster query from the database.

You just need a well written news type scripting with at least all the above mentioned characteristics.

Like I said, there really wasn't anything at all around here that gave the output I wanted. As far as I know, there still isn't.

I asked for months myself for someone to write something decent and nothing was ever written. So I wish you the best in your search. I really do.

Good luck,
Hooper
