Yes, if you believe the tooth fairy and Santa Claus.

My problem with vBSEO first and foremost is their snake oil marketing technique, which is very similar to the garbage you get in email spam promising you greater search engine traffic and higher listings.

First and foremost, the biggest element to gaining better placement is content. Relevant content. If you have a large forum with plenty of posts, you stand a better chance than having a small forum with occasional messages.

There are things you can do, free of charge, to optimize your site for best placement and the number of pages listed by Google and others. If you check the mods area, and articles posted here, you'll find a rich selection of ideas and plugins from which to choose. You don't have to spend near as much as the core vBulletin license to gain those things.

I just finished updating two forums that I administer for a friend, who runs a hosting company, and it took me less than half an hour each using free suggestions and mods. Of course, I had done my research.

vBSEO has two very visible functions. One is to rewrite URLs with supposedly SEO-friendly keywords and the other is to automatically parse URL links to include the actual title of the site. Beyond that, the picture gets murky. I tested the alleged meta tag and HTML optimization functions on those two sites (he was running the latest vBulletin and latest vBSEO on both), and they simply didn't work! They made no change whatever in the source code. I didn't bother to check the other stuff, as I felt that was sufficient to have severe questions about the product. So I removed it pronto!

The source code of the forum run by Crawlability, vBSEO's publisher, shows very little that would make it more SEO-friendly than any other forum, and it should be the best ad for the product.

To summarize: From rewriting URLs, to meta-tag enhancement, all the stuff is available in the Mods area of this site. That and SEO-friendly pointers posted in these forums and via Google search will help set up your forum and the rest of the site for the best possible SEO impact.

But, as I said, content is king!

Peace,
Gene Steinberg

Let me add one more thing: It appears some of the vBSEO supporters have made it into a quasi-religion. I attempted to participate in a forum about vBulletin enhancements where any negative comment about the product, however legitmate, was met with hate and filth. This is tragic. Folks, please don't fall into that trap.

Yes, organized religion can be a great comfort to most people, but investing your faith in a mod for a message board seems a bit much.

Peace,
Gene

That would suck, I'm always up for a good debate of facts, but I dont think i'd ever resort to hate and filth, well unless of course i was getting beat then i'd start the mud slinging!

And i do agree, vBSEO isn't necessary to SEO your forums, you can cut down on duplicate content with a simple robots.txt file, along with some rel=nofollow mods, and nifty template editing.

You can build your backlinks without it, and thats what really matters, don't buy into the hype that it will increase your traffic, or buy your BMW, that can all be done with free modifications/ good template editing.

However, if you're lazy like me, like pretty URL's and the linkbacks, its a decent product to have, however, I've pretty much stopped promoting/endorsing/pushing it to people, as everything can be done without it as well.
