I was going to make pumpkin pie from scratch this year. Didn't grow any pie pumpkins though and the large ones they sell for jack-o-lanterns are bitter. Local store advertised pie pumpkins in their weekly circular a week or so before Halloween so my wife and I went out of our way to get some. However this store never got their shipment and wasn't planning on stocking them at all. Was very disappointed and won't ever return there.

Next season, I'll be planting pie pumpkins in the yard for this purpose.

It's actually posted on my site under recipes - here (modified so anyone can use it). I put the link because there are more recipes in that thread.

Quote:
Streusal-Topped Pumpkin Pie

1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin or 2 cups of pumpkin puree
1 (14 oz.) can sweetened, condensed milk
1 egg
1 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp each: ginger, nutmeg, salt
2 (6 oz.) graham cracker pie crusts
1/4 c firmly packed brown sugar
2 tbs. all-purpose flour
2 tbs cold butter or margarine
3/4 c chopped walnuts or pecans

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Combine pumpkin, condensed milk, egg, 3/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ginger, 12 tsp nutmeg, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Mix well. Pour into pie crust.

2. Bake 15 minutes. Then remove pies from oven and reduce heat to 350 degrees.

3. Combine sugar, flour, and remaining 1/2 tsp cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in nuts. Sprinkle streusal mixture over pies.

4. Bake 40 minutes or until set.

5. Serve warm or at room temperature. Whipped cream optional. Refrigerate leftovers.
Or at least that's the version my wife posted...

Nice! Thanx for the sharing - but what is this about 2 CANS of pumpkin? :P
I think I'll share the recipe on JPiC as well - it looks really good - I like the idea of streusel topping - Inventive.

The exact reason why I said

No one is forced to use the real stuff - or if it isn't available, 2 cans should be the equivalent (I personally hate the canned stuff - nasty).
