Text Modification:
open text.led file with notepad or wordpad than make text changes also you can change text colors too.For changing colors add colors first character to starting of the text.
for example:\rH\gE\bL\yL\rO
r:red
g:green
b:black
y:yellow ect
and change the text lines in text.led

What would I need to do to get this to work on my portal home page? I tried putting the file names in the Header Replacements but that didn't do it.

you must edit your portals home page but ı dont know which portal are you using homepage,portal ect try this
admincp>>styles templates>>if you can see there adv_portal templates or your homepage template you can edit it

I got it to work by uploading the files in the folder 1 up from my root forum folder.
