5195 posts yesterday, my forum has been growing gently for quite some time....

last day at my "day" job was last Friday (11 years as a marketing director), have a 9-month PR gig (driving a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser around the country) and then my site will be my fulltime life.

it's taken 30-40 hours a week over the past year to get things where they are, and I'll have about $20,000 in hardware installed by the end of this year....

I'm wondering the same thing as aceofspades. Why are so many people here spending more than $100/month on hosting when they only have a few thousand unique visitors/daily? I pay $70/month for a reseller account with Steadfast Networks. I host about 15 sites, and I have 500GB bandwidth/month. Only get a dedicated server if you really need it.

I can understand why some people are only breaking even, or making tiny profits, but losing any significant amount per month because of hosting means that you have a setup that is likely too expensive for your needs.

I am donation supported only with no ads and bring in a few hundred $ a month. After my wife and I were in a motorcycle accident, the donations spiked to $3500 within a few weeks. I don't recommend this form of attracting donations...

I have been recently thinking about bring ads into the mix. They would be very targeted though and regional. I am not real interested in the adsense stuff yet. The big focus on my site is community. My users repeatedly tell me that it is the sense of community that keeps them coming back. I am wary of messing that up with ads.

I plan to do some merchandising. I think I can really make more money this way than by doing the ads.

I have never been in the hole with the site once I got up around 500 users.

One of my boards has Adsense on it, with approx. 1000 posts a day. And 20000 page-views daily. But no matter in what form I present the ads, I am not getting more than 3-4$/day. That is maximum. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but my members are just set to overlook it
Is there any other advertising module other than Google Adsense, which pays (let's say) for page-views, which would make at least enough cash to cover the expenses of my dedicated server?

I don't know what the board is about, but I think I get more conversion from my guests than from my members. I only have two adsense spots on my forums (header and before a thread), and with about 2,000 uniques on average (8,000 impressions) I get about $7-15 from that forum. It really goes up and down a lot but with your stats it sounds like you need to try different placement etc...

I also use CasaleMedia for popups for visitors (not for logged-in users) and that pays about $100 per month for my forums, so it's a welcome extra.

We get about 1500 hits and 8000-9000 page views a day.
I average about $2.00 a day with Adsense, $30.00 monthly from advertisers and on average $40.00 in donations/subscriptions.

I have just started using adsense. We do have forum subscriptions and donations buttons.
Went live around mid-december and have made around ?800. I have no server costs though, so all good.

Since Adsense started 1st of the month we have made $18 from it!! Wont be moving to Spain just yet though

i make out around 10$ frm ads and 5-10$ frm subscriptions ..though my hosting costs me very less

Approx $1700/month.... board is 6months old.

Expenses: VPS $50/month.
