I'm trying to backup my attachments, and for some reason everytime i attempt this it causes my server to hang, and then crash :-\ which results in a reboot.

My attachments are pushing 7GB, here are my system specs.
Intel Pentium D 930 [3GHz]
• Generic 1GB DDR2 [1GB]
• Generic 1GB DDR2 [1GB]
• Mainboard Onboard SATAII IDE Controller
• Hitachi DeskStar SATAII HDT722525DLA380 [250GB]

Also, i'm not sure if anyone can help me here with this or not, but on the rare occasion that the backup is perferomed i attempt to move it to my NAS, that is always gaurenteed to cause a crash.

Thanks for any suggestions

Probably because the hard disk is getting hung - is the database on the same harddisk?

yes,

I've ordered a new hard disk today, hopefully its installed soon, How hard would it be to move MySQL over to the new disk without loosing any data? I'm on a cPanel server if that matters

A backup drive is the way to go. And it wouldn't be too difficult really. Depending on how you want to go, you could just copy over the datadir to it's own partition and remount it in it's place (I love Linux filesystems ) or the entire /var directory (if you haven't changed from default). But, be sure to keep backups, and shut off MySQL before starting the move.

Very easy. I'll write a How-To on how to do this now.

Isn't it a hardware issue? I'd file a ticket with your host, a server shouldn't hang on the simple disk operations. And on the complex disk operations too, as a matter of fact.
