This thing stores the text on a central server. I think it's a cool little add-on but I would rather have something that would store the text on my own server. It would be nice to see a version that would work in IE (and other browsers) so chatting is not just an option for the small ammount of firefox users we get.
I like the idea, but I don't think they will be able to manage it if the add-on becomes popular. Can you imagine the kind of traffic a site like yahoo.com would push their way? If I were going to code a chat system like this I'd start with my own irc server. I'd build an applet that would work within the browser so the user could get to irc without needing a program on their own computer. To pull it all togther tie IRC's nickserv in with the user accounts used on your site (in our case vBulletin user accounts). |
