My Great Grandmother on my father's side ate potatoes with
every meal. She swore by them and said eating potatoes was the key to long life.
My great grandmother lived until her late 80's/ early 90's (I'm sorry can't remember the exact age and I forget her birthdate). I remember when I was 13, I'd be on my 4 wheeler in the field across from her house and she would be on the roof of the house (tin roof btw) with a broom sweeping the leaves off her roof. She always kept busy doing this or that (on a 100 acher farm there is always something to do), until her mind started to go and my grandparents started caring for her.
Near the end she got really bad, unable remember family and calling us by names that only existed in her mind. Durring certain times she was the person we all knew, but most of the time she was off in her own little world. Well, like I said the mind was going, and with the mind goes the body, she died in her sleep one night.
I think it would have been better if the death was sudden, we all knew it was coming and where expecting it all week, the doctor was surprised she held out as long as she did. People are strange before they die...the night before her death I was spending the night at my grandparents, and I heard my great grandmother ask her own son (my grandfather) to "Get the shotgun and get it over with". I can not imagine what that was like for my grandfather, or the pain that drove my great grandmother (a women afraid of nothing) to request such a thing.
Meh I shouldn't have ranted, BOT
